What is JAMB

Jamb stands for the joint administration and matriculation board. It is the agency in Nigeria that administers the unified tertiary matriculation examinations.

Why does JAMB conduct the unified tertiary matriculation exams (UTME)?

The joint administration and matriculation board Jamb conducts the unified matriculation examination exams as entrance examinations for students who have recently graduated from secondary schools.

Who is qualified to write JAMB?

For someone to be qualified for JAMB the person has to meet the following criteria. They include:

1. Age: The age requirements for anyone seeking to write JAMB is sixteen (16) years old.
2.  Nationality: Jamb only allows Nigerians who are citizens by birth to sit for its examinations.
3. Computer literacy: To successfully write the UTME examinations organized by JAMB, the individual must be a computer literate.
4. O level results: The joint administration and matriculation board requires all candidates to have a WAEC senior secondary school result or a NECO senior secondary school certificate. You can use awaiting results or joint results.
5. National identity number (NIN): It has now become mandatory for everyone that wants to write JAMB to have a national identity number (NIN) issued by the National identity management commission. (NIMC)

How can you register for JAMB?

After you have met the above criteria, let us look at how to register for JAMB/UTME examinations. Just follow the steps below.

Firstly, make sure you get your o level results (WAEC AND NECO), that is if you have already written your SSCE examinations. But if you have not written your SSCE exams yet, you will skip this step and will have to use awaiting results.

Secondly, you will have to locate available JAMB accredited centers around you. You can get the list by visiting the JAMB official website.

 Once you go through the list and have picked your preferred registration center, pick a date and go there.

Once you get there you will be required to purchase a JAMB form. You can buy the JAMB form at the registration center, in JAMB offices or in any commercial bank near you.

As at the time of writing this article the cost of the JAMB form is three thousand eight hundred naira only (3,800).

After you have bought the form, attached to it is a sixteen (16) digit pin.

Next, you will send this pin to 55019 to create a profile code.

It is this profile code that will be used to register you for JAMB.

What information will you be asked in the JAMB registration center?

1. You will be asked of your national identity number, NIN. It will be needed to activate your JAMB profile.
2. You will be asked about your personal information. Your full name (first name, middle name and last name),  your date of birth, your state of origin, your local government of origin, your state of residence, your local government of residence, your full contact address, your mobile phone number and your tribe.
3. Your preferred choice of institution: It is a JAMB policy that a candidate registering has four choices to make (first choice, second choice, third choice and fourth choice). The first choice is meant for federal universities, the second choice is meant for state universities, the third choice is for polytechnics and colleges of the education and the fourth choice is reserved for specialized training institutes.
4. Your preferred course of study. After you have selected your institutions, you will have to pick the course you will like to study. You can get the full list of courses on the JAMB website. It is also important to check the Nigerian university commission, NUC website to ensure that the university is accredited to offer that program.
5.  Your subject combination. One mistake many people make is choosing the wrong subject combination when registering for JAMB. When choosing subject combinations there are two 2 things to consider :
   1. Firstly, you have to confirm that the subjects you are choosing match the requirements of the course you want to study and
   2. Secondly, how well will you pass the subjects if you write it in JAMB?

What next after you register?

After you have successfully registered for JAMB, you will be issued a JAMB registration slip as evidence that you have finished registering for JAMB.

You will also be given a CD plate which contains the JAMB brochure and a literature book you will be reading for the exams.

When is JAMB starting?

Jamb usually starts   two weeks after the mock examinations. This is around the 1^st to third week of May.

How will you know where and when you will write your examinations?

When the registration is over a reprinting window will be opened to allow all successfully registered candidates to reprint their registration slips. This new slips will contain the time, the place, the date and the location of your exams.

What is JAMB mock exams and is it compulsory?

The JAMB mock examinations are preparatory exams and are therefore not compulsory. But it is strongly advised you take it in order to familiarize yourself especially if this is your first time. To participate in the mock exams you will have to a pay a token of five hundred naira only.

What you need to know before going to write your exam

1. Make sure keep to the time on your JAMB slip and be at your venue 30 minutes early.
2. Come with your reprinted slip as a means of identification to the venue in order to avoid embarrassment.
3. Do not carry any contraband or foreign material as it could implicate you.
4. You will be given rough paper in the venue

   How long will it take JAMB results to be ready?

With advancement in technology JAMB results are ready within few  days after writing them.
