Introduction to Garri
The term and the fact, ‘health is wealth’ is a statement that can never be over emphasize. Then, eating good foods, is a practicalization and dispensation of a healthy living. ‘Garri’ is part of those special kind of foods, that brings that healthy living into reality. Garri pronounced as (gah-ree), is a food substance made of fermented cassava. It’s Commonly found in the western part of Africa.
Garri Production
Garri production involves the peeling of cassava, grinding of the cassava, extracting water from the fermented cassava with the use of a jack and frying the extracted grains.
Types of Garri
In West Africa: Nigeria precisely. There are just mainly two types of Garri: the yellow, and white garri.
The yellow garri
The yellow garri, is a white garri mixed with palm oil, in the production process. It is believed that people in the eastern part of Nigeria prefer and embrace the yellow garri than the white garri. But it is not so. Garri is not a food segmented for a particular tribe, it’s for everyone because it came from the soil. That Aside, it’s necessary to know that, yellow garri is costly in the market than white garri.
White Garri
In contrast to yellow garri, white garri are plainly white. Meanwhile; White garri tends to, quickly expose the status and nature of a particular garri one intend to buy. I.e if it’s dirty, or not properly fried.
Garri ijebu and Lebu: this is another type of white garri, made out of a specially, or highly fermented cassava grains, to the state of absolute smoothness. So as breeze would nearly blow it away. It often, taste pleasantry sour, because of the flavour, the well fermented cassava grains gives to the Garri Ijebu/Lebu, especially when drinking it or snacking. It was named garri ijebu because such garri is mostly found among the ijebus, and the Lebu was derived out of the smoothness of the this garri.
Consuming Garri
Garri can be consume In different ways. It can be snack, soak in a water for drinking purpose. It’s advisable to add, milk and chocolate if one intends to drink it, it would add to the already nutritional values of the Garri, and enrich the body. Then lastly, Garri can be pour into a hot water, kneeding it with a wooden baton it becomes a smooth doughy, known as EBA.
Eba (garri flour) can be consumed with any types of soup, including: stew, okro, bitter leaf and not excluding other Nigeria traditional soups.
