LisaThe Federal Government has allowed the formation of a competing organization, the Congress of University Academics, in what appears to be an effort to split the ranks of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, or ASUU, which is now on strike.
This is because the government has ordered them to start working again right now.
In the Conference Room of the Ministry of Labour and Employment on Tuesday, a Certificate of Registration was given to the new academic union headquartered at universities.
The Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment has decided to approve the registration of two (2) more Trade Unions in the Nigerian University in order to fulfill its mandate in the management of Employment Relationships and the Administration of Trade Unions to ensure harmonious industrial relations system in the country, according to Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Employment, who presented the letters and copies of the Trade Union Act to the groups at his office in Abuja.
He declared that the two unions would work alongside ASUU.
“The University Sub-Sector is a vital development plank of any Nation’s Socio Economic Growth,” the Minister asserted. As they say, knowledge is power.
It should be mentioned that the Honourable Minister of Labour and Employment has the authority to reorganize an existing Trade Union of Workers or Employers under Section 3(2) of the Trade Unions Act, CAP. T14, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (LFN) 2004. The Section in question declares
