WAEC stands for west African examination council. It is the body saddled with the responsibility of conducting exams for students who have completed their secondary school education. The headquarters of the west African examination council (WAEC) is in Accra, Ghana. WAEC was established in the year 1952. According to their official website, they have three mandates which include; assisting in the development of sound education, ensuring that the educational standards are maintained and to give the people of west Africa a vision of the great potential beyond the exams.

The countries of the west African region usually partake in the examinations. They are sixteen (16) in number. The countries include:

Types of WAEC
The west African examination council organizes two types of examinations for students leaving secondary school. They include:
1. West African senior secondary certificate examinations (WASSCE)
2. General certificate examination (GCE)

But for those that may want to register for WAEC, below are the requirements to register for WAEC:
Candidates who want to register for WAEC must be sixteen (16) years or older when registering for WAEC.
If you planning to register for WASSCE you must be a student of a WAEC approved secondary school (this does not apply for students who want to register for GCE.
What are the requirements for a school to be WAEC approved?
For a school to be approved by WAEC it has to meet the following standards:
At least fifty (50) registered candidates: for any school to be approved by WAEC it has to have 50 students who are seating for the exams.
Functional laboratories: for the west African examination council (WAEC) to be approved, they must have laboratories like physics laboratories, chemistries laboratories, computer laboratories etc.
A large capacity hall: WAEC requires any school seeking approval to have a hall or a big enough space to accommodate students
Qualified staffs : To quality as a WAEC accredited school , the school must show that they have capable staffs to invigilate the students.
Safe, secure and serene environment : WAEC usually looks for schools that complies with the 3s( safety, Security and Serenity) before giving any form of accreditation.
How to register for a WAEC

The steps in checking WAEC result include :
1. After your school have been successfully accredited a portal will be created for your school to register you for the WAEC examinations
2. Your school will give you a form which you are to fill with your proper information. Note : It is very important that you do not make mistakes when when filling this form as the consequences could be deadly.
3. Your details you filled will be put back on the registration portal after which your biometrics will be captured. Your picture will also be taken. This will be used for your ID card
4. After capturing your biodata, an examination number will be issued to you.
What next after registration
After you have registered, you will be given your examination ID card, a mathematical set and a calculator.
