American musician Taylor Benjamin York is the lead and rhythm guitarist for the rock group Paramore. York was born in the United States on December 17, 1989. Up until 2022, his brother Justin, who plays guitar for both bands, was a touring member of Relient K and Paramore.
Biography
York was born in Nashville, Tennessee, on December 17, 1989, the youngest of three sons. There, he spent his whole formative years. His father, Peter York, serves as chairman and CEO of Capitol Christian Music Group. Taylor and Justin both picked up guitar skills from their uncle Peter, who also plays the instrument. At Capitol Records, Chris York, Taylor’s older brother, serves as Senior Director of A&R. Taylor is the youngest of three brothers, with Chris York being the oldest.
York and the Farro brothers had been playing in a band together for a number of months prior to York and the brothers ever meeting Hayley Williams. Zac Farro met York and Williams at a high school football game, and the two of them hit it up right away. As a band member, York helped write songs like “Conspiracy” from All We Know Is Falling as well as the bonus track “O Star,” which was the first song York wrote with Williams by themselves soon after the two of them first met when they were 12 and 13. York has “officially” been a part of Paramore’s touring band since 2007.
Influences
York has said that his favorite musicians include mewithoutYou, Radiohead, Kent, Yann Tiersen, At the Drive-In, Failure, Bjork, Kadawatha, and Paper Route. He recently highlighted Afrobeat music as having a significant effect on his writing for After Laughter in interviews. This effect has only recently become apparent. Talking Heads, Fleetwood Mac, Blondie, Paul Simon, The Strokes, Thomas Mapfumo, Tame Impala, and The Cure have all been named as some of his favorite bands and musicians as well as influences.
Paramore
York has previously provided the band with backup vocals before the publication of All We Know Is Falling. Hunter Lamb joined Paramore as the rhythm guitarist after Hunter Lamb left the group in 2007. He was acknowledged in the liner notes of the band’s second studio album, “Riot!” by Hayley Williams, Josh Farro, and Zac Farro. In addition, he helped write the extra track “Stop This Song” and the songs “That’s What You Get,” which were both written by his brother Justin York.
Paramore released a live album titled The Final Riot! after the release of their studio album Riot! York was listed as a band member in the liner notes of the latter record. The band Paramore officially welcomed York as a member on June 15, 2009. Williams revealed her belief that York will leave the band soon after Josh and Zac Farro left after their departure.
“When everything went down, it was difficult for me to make a decision,” York said during the interview. Simply put, I wasn’t ready for it. I remember at one point losing control and breaking down in tears. I just knew I wasn’t done and how much I loved playing in a band with Jeremy and Hayley. I started crying and lost it. I still had a lot to do for the band, so I just kept going forward.
With the band, I still had a lot of work to do, so I just concentrated on the future and completed it. Williams also disclosed that Taylor and she weren’t particularly close around that time.
After seeing a concert together, they finally met for coffee. Williams recalls crying in her car after the concert and realizing that the band would still be able to function normally even without York being present. They settled their issues after that and have gotten even closer since then. Since then, York has contributed to the albums’ songwriting and recording.
Hayley Williams, the lead vocalist for Paramore, reportedly left the band for a brief period of time in 2015 out of despair. After that, only bassist Jeremy Davis remained in the group, which led to a disagreement between York and Williams about who should be credited as the writer and owner of the songs on Paramore’s self-titled fourth album. Since then, York has remained Paramore’s lone member. York has received praise from Williams for helping to keep her alive while she was in a depressed state. She also credits him for keeping Paramore’s band together and preventing its dissolution.
